Signs of spring failure
- Visible gap in a torsion spring
- Loud bang followed by a door that will not lift
- Opener strains or raises the door only a few inches
- Door feels unusually heavy
- Door movement has become uneven
Torsion and extension springs
Torsion springs are commonly mounted above the door on a shaft. Extension springs usually run along the horizontal tracks. Both store significant energy and should be treated as high-tension components.
Broken spring and opener strain
An opener is not designed to replace the counterbalance provided by a healthy spring system. Continuing to run the opener with a broken spring can add stress to other parts.
