Signs of spring failure

• Visible gap in a torsion spring

Torsion and extension springs

Torsion springs are commonly mounted above the door on a shaft. Extension springs usually run along the horizontal tracks. Both store significant energy and should be treated as high-tension components.

Broken spring and opener strain

An opener is not designed to replace the counterbalance provided by a healthy spring system. Continuing to run the opener with a broken spring can add stress to other parts.
